The Coastal Carpet Python (Morelia spilota mcdowelli) is the largest subspecies of the Morelia spilota complex. Native to the east coast of Australia from northern New South Wales through Queensland, Coastals are the most widely kept subspecies in captivity and form the genetic foundation for many of the established morphs – Caramel, Hypo, Jaguar, and Tiger all originated exclusively in M. s. mcdowelli.
Wild-type Coastals display a robust build with bold dark brown to black dorsal banding or irregular blotching on a lighter tan to olive ground. Considerable natural variation exists across their range. Hatchlings are typically dark, developing their adult coloration and contrast with maturity.
This is a wild-type animal with no morph mutations – a pure M. s. mcdowelli from documented Coastal lineage.
