Hypo
Hypo (hypomelanistic) is an intermediately inherited mutation originating from Coastal Carpet Pythons (M. s. mcdowelli). It reduces melanin production without eliminating it – dark pigmentation is diminished, allowing the underlying warm tones (yellow, orange) produced by xanthophores and erythrophores to dominate visually. Hypo does not create new colors; it removes the dark overlay that suppresses them.
Phenotypic variability is high – the degree of melanin reduction varies considerably between individuals, even within the same clutch. Line selection across generations is critical for consistent quality. Hatchlings are often strikingly orange or red, among the most visually intense neonates in the Morelia spilota complex. Adults typically settle into lemon or orange tones, often with a characteristic green tinge.
One copy = visual Hypo; two copies = Super Hypo (dramatically lighter, minimal pattern contrast). Without a "pure Coastal" label, this animal has a mixed subspecies background.
